Search for sunroom ideas and almost everything you find is aimed at someone who hasn't got one yet. That's not an accident: a sunroom addition in the US averages about $47,000, with most projects landing between $22,000 and $75,000 — roughly $150 to $300 per square foot. A three-season room runs $8,000 to $50,000; a four-season room, insulated and on the HVAC system, $20,000 to $80,000. At those numbers the internet fills up with contractors, and the question "how do I make this room good" never gets answered.
So: if you're weighing the build, the figures above are the honest starting point and a contractor is your next call, not a decorating guide. Everything below assumes the glass is already up.
And the room you have is almost certainly failing in one of three specific ways. It's too hot from eleven to four. Everything in it has gone pale. And it's furnished like an indoor room, which is why the cushions feel damp in May. All three are materials problems with known answers.
The Thing Nobody Tells You: Glass Isn't Protection

Solution-dyed fabric has the pigment mixed into the liquid before the fibre is extruded, so colour runs all the way through. There is no surface layer to lose. - Solution-dyed polyester holds a good appearance for roughly 5 to 7 years — noticeably less, noticeably cheaper, and a perfectly sensible choice for a room you'll refresh anyway.
- Plain polyester resists UV better than natural fibres but does fade.
- Cotton and linen fade fastest of the common options. They are the fabrics that make a sunroom look beautiful in photographs and tired in two summers.
For anything that gets sat on daily, also check the abrasion figure: 25,000 Martindale rubs or higher, combined with a genuine UV rating, is the combination that survives a room that is both high-light and high-use.
Two practical notes that follow:
Buy one spare cushion cover set at the same time as the furniture. Sunroom fabrics get discontinued, and a single replacement cushion two years later will not match — not because the fabric changed, but because yours has aged and the new one hasn't.
Rotate the cushions. It sounds trivial and it is the reason some sunrooms look uniform after five years and others look like a photograph that was half in shadow. Flip and swap them a few times a season and the fading happens evenly, which reads as age rather than damage.
Shade: Pick a Number, Not a Look
Solar shades are sold by openness factor — the percentage of the fabric surface that is open weave. A 3% shade is 97% solid fibre. This single number decides almost everything about how the shade performs, and it's the thing showrooms explain last.
- 1–2% openness blocks roughly 95% of heat. Maximum control, most privacy, least view — the fabric reads close to a solid blind during the day.
- 3–5% openness blocks roughly 90% of heat. This is the working range for a sunroom that actually overheats, and 3% is the usual all-round answer: strong glare and heat control while keeping a legible view out.
- 10% openness keeps the most view and the most daylight, takes the hard edge off direct sun, and gives you the least heat and privacy protection of the four.
Advice online splits on which of these a sunroom wants, and the split is really a question about what your room's problem is. If the complaint is "it's unusable in the afternoon", buy 3% or 5%. If the room already stays comfortable and the complaint is only glare on a screen or a bit of squinting, 10% keeps the view that made you want the room in the first place. Buying 10% for a west-facing room that hits 95°F in July will not fix it, and that is the most common mistake in this category.
Two placement notes:
Exterior shades beat interior shades on heat, because they stop the energy before it enters the glass. Interior shades intercept it after it's already in the room. If heat is the whole problem and the room's construction allows it, outside is the better side.

Rugs: polypropylene, not wool or jute. Indoor-outdoor polypropylene is made from fibre that is coloured through and doesn't hold water, so it dries rather than staying damp and it doesn't feed mildew. Wool holds moisture and felts; jute and sisal absorb humidity and go brittle, then smell. This is the single most common furnishing mistake in a sunroom, because a jute rug is exactly the texture the room seems to want.
Wood furniture: choose stable species, and expect the finish to go first. Teak, cedar and eucalyptus handle the cycle; veneered and engineered pieces delaminate at the edges. Whatever you use, the finish will chalk on the sun-facing side before the wood itself complains — plan on refinishing rather than treating it as a failure.
Air movement is the fix for the damp feeling. A ceiling fan in a sunroom is not a luxury or a temperature device; it's what stops still humid air sitting in the cushions. Run it on low when the room is empty in spring and autumn and the clammy problem largely disappears.
Plants: Match the Glass, Not the Wish List
A sunroom is the best plant room in the house and the easiest one to kill things in, because the light is far more intense than the "bright indirect" that most houseplant advice assumes.
Directly against south or west glass you have effectively full sun, with heat build-up on top of it. That suits citrus, succulents, cacti, bougainvillea, hibiscus, jade and herbs. Ferns, calatheas and most of the fashionable dark-leaved foliage plants will scorch there within weeks, and their failure is usually blamed on watering.
The arrangement that works: sun-lovers on the glass, foliage plants set back three or four feet or against the interior wall, where the light is genuinely bright-indirect. Under glass, plants also dry out far faster than the same plant in a living room — a sunroom pot in July may need water daily, which is the opposite of the neglect most houseplants prefer.
Paint Colors for a Room With Almost No Walls
Sunroom paint colors is a real question with a slightly surprising answer: in most sunrooms there is very little wall to paint. There's the knee wall under the glazing, the window frames, the ceiling, and the one shared wall with the house. Those four surfaces are the decision, not "what colour is the room".
The ceiling is the biggest paintable surface and does the most work. A white or very pale ceiling bounces light and keeps the room feeling open; a colour up there in a room already flooded with light is one of the few places a saturated choice works without making the space smaller.

The shared wall with the house is where colour belongs. It's the one surface that behaves like a normal wall, and a deeper colour there gives the room somewhere to rest its eye. It also stops the sunroom reading as a glass box stuck onto the side of a house.
Assume the colour will look different by the hour, because it will. Test patches on the actual wall and look at them at 9am, 2pm and 6pm before committing; a sunroom is the room where a sample chip under shop lighting is least predictive. And use an exterior-grade or high-durability interior paint on anything that takes direct sun — paint fades under UVA exactly the way fabric does.
The Short Version

- Buy solution-dyed fabric. Acrylic if it's staying a decade, polyester if it isn't. Not cotton, not linen.

None of this is about taste, which is the point. Get the materials right and a sunroom will take whatever style you want to put in it — and still look like that in five years.
