There is a version of the coastal bathroom that looks perfect on the day it's finished and has black speckles in the grout lines by the following spring. Beadboard swollen at the base. A teak stool that's gone green in the corners. Brass taps with a white crust at the joints. The homeowner concludes that the look "doesn't work in a real bathroom" and repaints it grey.
The look works. What didn't work was the water management, and in a coastal bathroom that isn't a plumbing footnote — it's the design. The style is built on pale, porous, natural surfaces, and every one of them is fine as long as the room dries out between uses. So this guide runs in the order the water does: out through the fan, off the tile, out of the grout, off the wood, and finally off the fixtures and the paint. The colours are at the end, once the room can hold them.
The Fan: Size It by the Numbers, and Make It Quiet Enough to Use
The exhaust fan is the most important fixture in the room and the one nobody chooses on purpose. The builder's-grade fan that came with the house is almost certainly too small and too loud, and a loud fan is a fan nobody switches on, which is the same as no fan.
The Home Ventilating Institute's sizing rule is simple for rooms under 100 square feet: 1 CFM per square foot of floor, minimum 50 CFM. A 5×8 bathroom (40 sq ft) still gets a 50-CFM fan; an 8×10 gets 80. For rooms over 100 square feet, size by fixture instead: 50 CFM each for the toilet, the shower and the tub, and 100 CFM for a jetted tub, added together. A large primary bath with a toilet, a shower and a soaking tub wants 150 CFM, which is three times what's probably in the ceiling now.
The other number is the sone rating — loudness. HVI's guidance for a fan people will actually use is 1.0 sone or less, which is about the hum of a refrigerator; the builder-grade fans run 3 to 4 sones, which is why they get switched off. Below 1.0 the fan can run for twenty minutes after a shower without anyone noticing, and the easiest way to guarantee that it does is a humidity-sensing switch or a timer switch in place of the plain toggle — the fan comes on when the air gets wet and goes off when it's dry, and the pale surfaces in the next four sections stop being a maintenance problem.
Vent it to the outside, through the roof or a wall, in rigid or smooth-walled duct. A fan that vents into the attic moves the moisture problem from the grout to the roof timbers.
The Tile: Two Numbers on the Spec Sheet
Coastal bathrooms lean toward pale tile — white, sand, sea-glass green — and toward a handmade or textured look. Neither of those matters to the water. What matters is two figures on the spec sheet that most retailers don't volunteer.
Water absorption. Under the American tile standard (ANSI A137.1), a tile can only be called porcelain if it absorbs 0.5% or less of its weight in water; ordinary ceramic absorbs more. That half-percent line is the difference between a tile that shrugs off a shower floor and one that slowly takes on water behind the glaze. For walls in a dry part of the room, ceramic is fine and often prettier. For the shower floor, the shower walls and the floor around a tub, buy porcelain and check the number.
Wet slip resistance. Floor tile in a wet area has to meet a DCOF of 0.42 or higher (dynamic coefficient of friction, tested wet, under ANSI A326.3 — the standard the Tile Council of North America developed). Polished porcelain and the glossy white subway tile people love on coastal walls frequently fall below it, which is why the same tile that's perfect on the wall is a hazard on the floor. Matte, textured or small-format tile with more grout lines generally clears the bar; the spec sheet will state it. On a shower floor, small mosaic — 2-inch hex, penny round — clears it almost automatically and follows the slope, which by code is ¼ inch per foot toward the drain.
Colour and format are yours. A pale, matte 2×8 on the walls in a straight stack, a 2-inch hex on the floor, and a plain white porcelain in the shower is a coastal bathroom that will still look like one in ten years.
The Grout: Epoxy, and Not the Pale One You Wanted
Grout is where the coastal bathroom is won or lost, because the look calls for pale grout on pale tile — and pale cement grout is a sponge with a colour.
Standard cement grout is porous. It absorbs water, holds it, and grows mildew in it, and it has to be sealed on installation and re-sealed every year or two to stay clean. Epoxy grout is non-porous — effectively waterproof, resistant to staining and to mould, and it never needs sealing. It costs more, it's harder to work with (the tile setter will charge for the difference), and it is the single upgrade that keeps a white-tiled coastal bathroom white.
Two practical notes:
- Go one shade darker than you think. White grout on white tile looks clean for a month. A warm light grey or a sand reads as white from across the room and doesn't show the inevitable.
- Epoxy in the shower and on the floor; cement is acceptable on dry walls if the budget doesn't stretch, since the wall above the vanity never gets wet enough to matter. Seal it anyway.
The Wood: Teak Is the Exception, Not the Rule
Coastal bathrooms want wood in them — a stool by the tub, a vanity, open shelves, a slatted bath mat — because it's the only warm material in a room of white and blue. Almost all of it will fail, because almost all wood does in standing water. The exceptions are specific.
Teak is the one wood that genuinely belongs in a wet room, and the reason is chemistry, not fashion. It carries a high content of natural oils and silica that make the wood itself water-, rot- and insect-resistant — it's why it's been the deck timber on boats for two hundred years. A teak stool or shower bench can take a daily soaking. Left alone it weathers to a soft silver-grey, which is the coastal colour anyway; oiled once or twice a year it stays honey-brown. Either is right; the mistake is to oil it once and then forget, which gives you blotchy.
Below teak, the options thin out fast:
- Cedar has real natural rot resistance and is fine for a slatted mat or a shelf that gets splashed, not soaked.
- White oak — the coastal vanity wood — is only moderately water-resistant when finished, and needs a marine-grade varnish on every surface including the underside and the cut-outs for the plumbing, which is where vanities actually rot. Ask the cabinetmaker what's on the inside of the sink cabinet; if the answer is nothing, that's where the damage will start.
- Pine, poplar, and anything painted white are fine in a powder room and a bad idea beside a tub.
Shiplap and beadboard, the coastal bathroom's favourite wall, follows the same logic. Standard MDF beadboard swells in steam — it's compressed sawdust and it behaves like it. Moisture-resistant (MR) MDF is acceptable on walls away from the shower; PVC beadboard is fully waterproof and is the right call for a tub surround or anywhere it'll be splashed, and once painted it's indistinguishable from the wood version. Real wood boards work if they're sealed on all sides and kept out of the spray. Whichever you use, stop it a few inches short of the floor and finish with a tile baseboard, so the bottom edge — the one that gets mopped — never sits in water.
And the natural-fibre rug — the jute, sisal or seagrass that's in every other coastal room — does not come in here at all. Every rug-care source says the same thing: in a bathroom's humidity the fibres mould, mildew and break down. A cotton or wool bath mat that goes in the wash, or a teak slat mat that drains, does the job.
The Fixtures: What the Finish Is Made Of
Brass is the coastal bathroom's metal — warm against the white, the colour of a boat fitting — and there are two very different things sold under the name.
Unlacquered ("living") brass is raw brass with no protective coating. It patinas with use, moisture and, near the sea, salt air: it darkens, spots and mottles, and the people who choose it choose it for exactly that. In a high-moisture bathroom, though, the fixture makers themselves generally recommend a lacquered or otherwise protected finish, because a living finish in a steamy room goes patchy rather than gracefully aged, and the salt crust around the joints is real.
The protected finishes are not all equal. Traditional plating — a thin layer of the finish metal electroplated over the base — can wear through at the handle and pit in salt air. PVD (physical vapour deposition) bonds the finish to the metal at the molecular level; the hardware trade rates it at two to three times the life of an electroplated finish and it's the finish specified for coastal architectural hardware for that reason, often with a 25-year guarantee behind it. If the tap says "PVD brushed brass" or "PVD nickel", that's the one. Polished chrome is the other finish that holds up in anything, and it's a perfectly coastal choice against white — the Hamptons cousin of the style uses little else.
Whatever the finish, the anchor guide's rule on the screws and hinges holds in the bathroom too: within a few miles of salt water, 316 stainless for anything that's fixed to the wall, or the finish will outlast the fastener.
The Paint: Sheen First, Then the Colour
Coastal bathroom walls want to be pale and slightly coloured — this is the room where the blue-green that the rest of the house uses as an accent can go on the wall — but the sheen matters more than the colour, and it's the opposite of the rest of the house. Elsewhere, coastal walls are matte. In the bathroom, satin or semi-gloss: the tighter resin binder gives a harder, less porous surface that resists mildew and wipes clean. A dedicated bathroom paint with a mildewcide is worth the small premium on the ceiling, which is the surface that takes the steam first.

Bathroom light is mostly artificial, and the colour temperature of the bulbs changes these colours more than daylight does: at 2700K they go warmer and greener; at 3000–3500K they hold; at 4000K they go clinical. Pick the bulbs first, then the paint, and sample on the wall the mirror reflects — that's the one you'll see twice.
The Short Version
A quiet fan sized at 1 CFM per square foot on a humidity switch, vented outside. Porcelain at 0.5% absorption where it's wet and a DCOF of 0.42 on the floor. Epoxy grout, one shade darker than white. Teak for anything that gets soaked, PVC beadboard for anything that gets splashed, and no natural-fibre rug at all. PVD or chrome on the taps, 316 on the screws. Satin paint in a pale blue in the low 60s, chosen under the bulbs you'll use.
None of that is visible in the finished room. All of it is why the finished room is still pale, still warm and still clean in five years.
